From Across the Musselshell

Step inside the Upper Musselshell Museum and you never quite know what you'll find next. A full-size replica of a dinosaur skeleton unearthed near Shawmut. A sled hearse from Castle Town, still carrying its ghoulish passenger. Arrowheads from bison kill sites across the valley, alongside a Nez Perce exhibit. One of the largest collections of HO scale Milwaukee Road models in the country. A homestead cabin, the Rooms on the Ledge — kitchen, parlor, toy room, schoolroom — and a wall of photographs telling the story of Harlowton's earliest businesses.

The museum is housed in the Marshall Building, a two-story sandstone landmark built in 1908 that has been, in its time, a hardware store, a livery, a blacksmith shop, a J.C. Penney, and upstairs apartments. Today it holds the belongings, tools, and stories of the families who settled and shaped the Upper Musselshell River country — from the Plains tribes who hunted here, to the ranchers and railroaders who followed.
